We officially survived our first road trip as a family of 5. We went to Disney for Honeybun’s birthday and 4th of July celebration. It was Doodle’s first car ride over an hour and he did great. Hubby’s parents went along with us so we needed two cars and thank goodness cause we had a ton of stuff!
The last trip we took to Disney with the girls, I remember looking into the back seat and seeing how comfy they were. Though the trunk was pretty much full from our one small suitcase, a buggy, Sugarplum’s blow up bed, food and other miscellaneous items, the girls had ample room for entertaining themselves in the back seat. Hubby’s car has a nice fold down center console which can actually be folded down between the girls’ seats. The console has cup holders and a flip up lid which reveals a great space for keeping books and other small toys easily within reach.
For this latest trip the girls were able to continue enjoying their space as Doodle rode with me and hubby’s dad and the girls rode in hubby’s car with him and his mom (I refused to remove any of the car seats since we had enough seats for everyone with all the car seats installed). Between our family’s large suitcase, grandma and grandpas two small suitcases, the buggy, a cooler, Doodle’s travel bed and other miscellaneous small items, both trunks were full.
It’s funny how on car trips the more people there are the less space you have. Travelling by ourselves or just with Honeybun was never a problem as we could use the back seats and back seat floor space for anything that didn’t fit in the trunk. Even when we added Sugarplum we were usually okay because we still had the backseat floor space and the middle seat. The problem now is Doodle requires that middle seat space and the amount of stuff required when travelling with a newborn is extraordinary.
Hubby and I once moved across the country in two cars, everything important to our existence packed in tight. At that moment I never thought that someday one car would barely be enough for our family to take a weekend road trip!
