I’m not a big drinker, but I do occasionally enjoy a glass of wine with my dinner or a nice cold beer on a hot afternoon (which is nearly every day in Florida!). As long as I’ve been a mommy, though, I’ve had a standing rule: no drinking when I’m alone with my kids.
This rule has nothing to do with driving, even when we were in Ireland and didn’t have a car, I didn’t drink when hubby was gone. It’s a matter of safety; I want to be sure that I am 100% capable of handling any situation that may arise to the best of my ability. Even when my children are asleep for the night, I still won’t drink because if something happens I want to be able to attend to them properly and get them help if needed.
Trust me, it’s not always easy. It’s not that I want to drink to de-stress or “take the edge off”, in fact I hate the feeling of being even tipsy. But sometimes I just want a gosh-darn beer! (I rarely crave wine and hardly ever drink hard liquor.) There are times when I just want something refreshing and water, milk, juice, tea, and soda have nothing on a nice cold beer!
