This month, I’m going to focus on Gross Motor Development. As Doodle approaches his first birthday and is still not yet walking independently, I’m getting more and more anxious! As parents it is easy to get caught up in what is “normal” or “typical” and compare children to one another (both our own and others we know around the same age) but it’s important to remember that all children develop and gain skills at their own pace and every skill has an age range which is considered “normal.”
I’ve always loved watching children reach new milestones, specifically those gross motor milestones because it’s impossible to miss the first time a child sits, stands, crawls and walks!
Being a preschool teacher of infant and toddlers, I know that many gross motor milestones occur in the first year, but I also know as a ballet teacher that motor development does no stop once a child becomes a toddler. When do children generally learn to skip, gallop, ride a bike, balance on one leg? While these milestones may not seem as significant as the baby milestones, they can be very important in determining developmental delays and learning disorders.
I’m excited to explore each milestone individually throughout the month and offer my experience with my own kids as well as during my time as a teacher. I’ll share tips and information on the many things we can do as caregivers to help children reach each movement milestone and things that will hinder progress as well as what red flags we should watch for when determining if a child is hitting their movement milestones or might be falling behind.
