Oh my, one year ago today was a big day! It was the day Sugarplum got her first haircut. She was nearly 3 and I had delayed cutting it for long enough (the full story of my kids’ hair is at “Hair Dos”). I was also in labor with Doodle the entire afternoon.
When we got to my friend’s place who cuts our hair, I was having pretty regular contractions and I was thinking “this is probably it.” It was my Nana’s birthday (who passed away when I was pregnant with Honeybun) and two days before my due date. I had been convinced for months that Doodle would be early since he had dropped weeks before.
After haircuts, Honeybun had ballet and then we went home where I made dinner for my family and my parents who were in town waiting for Doodle’s arrival. I spent the entire time having contractions but trying not to let anyone know, just in case it was false labor.
Anywho, Doodle was born the next morning (I should have known, the contractions started on Wednesday. Fun fact: all my children were born on a Thursday. And so was I. And so was hubby!)
As we approach the one year mark (we’re not there yet, one day to go, he is NOT one yet!) I can’t help but be a little stressed about his first haircut. Both girls were around the 3 year mark before taking the plunge but Doodle is a boy and I know I won’t be able to get to 3 years old with him and I’m a little stressed about having to pick a style.
The girls were easy “just trim it up!” I did give Honeybun the choice last cut (about 6 months ago) if she wanted to keep her long hair or cut it shorter and she wanted long. But boys need a do, they need intention and I’m not sure what that will be for us and our little man.
All I really know is right now he is just too cute with his little natural mohawk, maybe we’ll just go with that!
Loving the mohawk! It’s super cute and cool. My poor 3 1/2 year old daughter has never had a hair cut. She hardly has any hair while her 6 year old sis has a mane of blond curls. I on the other hand am ready for a change and stressing about my own do. Who knew hair could be so stressful?
So true, Heather! I’ve had the same ‘do since forever! I can pull it off since I’m a dancer (long hair always works for a nice bun!) but sometimes I think it’s time for a change but I’m too afraid to commit to anything that might take extra time I don’t have!
Awww…he’s adorable in that mohawk. My baby boy (7 months) frequently wears a mohawk as well, but unfortunately, his mohawk is normally given to him by his sisters – who think it’s hilarious.
Having my 2 girls first – like you – I always waited as long as possible to have their hair cut. I mean, why? No need to cut it if it’s not bothering them right? But my son’s hair is already starting to get long in the front and he has way more hair than either of the girls had at the same age. I’m going to have to cut it, and probably before his first birthday. Not sure what I’m going to do with it either. Honestly, I’ll probably let my husband decide (that’s an easy way to get out of it, right?)!
It’s like you’re writing out of my head, Jennifer! “Just let the dad decide!” Our problem is it’s getting long over the ears, he’s basically bald on top other than the mohawk. I’m tempted to just trim it over the ears myself!
