A few nights ago Honeybun and I attended a blogger dinner at our local Tijuana Flats where we were able to try some of the great new items they are going to be featuring July 9 through September 2 on their Hemp inspired menu.
If you’ve never been to Tijuana Flats (they currently have over 100 restaurants in six states with more coming soon), it’s a truly unique experience. The restaurants taut brightly colored, comic inspired, murals all over the walls (you can see an awesome timelapse video of the mural at my local location where the event was held here) and a hot sauce bar to die for (quite literally if you don’t have a high tolerance for spicy things).
I’ve been a few times with the kids (though I’ve yet to get hubby in there) and we’ve always experienced great, fast and friendly service and enough food to feed an army at a reasonable price.
The items Honeybun and I got to try included:
They also make Honeybun a kid’s quesadilla which comes with choice of filling, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, chips, soft drink, Hershey’s milk or apple juice, Mott’s applesauce, fresh banana, or a treat. (She chose chicken and a banana on the side and thought it was delicious!)
The three burritos we tried are part of the limited-time “Hemptaition” menu and are served on hemp tortillas which were surprisingly soft and delicious (Nothing drives me crazier than a tortilla that crumbles in your hand and I’m the woman who stands in the Mexican food aisle bending all the tortillas packages to make sure I get a fresh, soft one!)
The highlights for me of the menu was definitely the Atom Bombs (the Smack my Sweet Ass sauce they come with is AH-mazing!) and the Sweet Hemptation Burrito (though the Pie Roller came in a close second). I was so excited to try the Sweet Hemptation when they first listed the ingredients and I have to say on the night I was a bit underwhelmed. It is very rich and filling and I think I was just too stuffed to really appreciate it but I was able to bring some home and try it again the next day and I was sold! It is so good, even the girls loved it (especially the bacon, I could seriously eat a plate of just the maple syrup and cinnamon sugar covered bacon!) The tree hugger didn’t really do it for me, but I’m also not a huge mushroom fan which was a key player in the burrito but it seemed to please many others there who are perhaps more tolerant of mushrooms (truthfully, looking at the menu, I would never choose the Tree Hugger to begin with but I’m willing to try anything when it’s placed in front of me!)
Honeybun devoured the chips and dip (the guacamole was her favorite) and didn’t leave much room for her quesadilla but devoured her Banana Empanada and says that was her favorite part (don’t have a Tijuana Flats near you? Check out my recipe for easy homemade Banana Empanadas, not as delicious but still pretty good and amazingly easy). She also tried each of the new burritos and found the Pie Roller too spicy (the pepperoni) and I’m not sure she even tasted the Tree Hugger before declaring it also too spicy and spitting it out. But she really liked the Sweet Hemptation and ate more than I did (I was so full!)
I know I’ll be back to my Tijuana Flats for another Sweet Hemptation (and most likely some Banana Empanads for the girls) before the special menu is gone on September 2nd and I highly recommend you do the same!
