I am the proud mommy of a shelter pet. Our youngest kitty, Franklin, was adopted from a rescue group when we were living in Oklahoma. He was the scrawny, scared little kitty and even the manager tried to talk us out of it. “He’s not a good cat. He just hides all day. He’ll probably just hide under the couch all the time and never come out to see you.”
But something told me we needed him, maybe because I knew he needed us. I stood there for probably 15 minutes holding him, petting him, waiting for him to let us know he wanted to come home with us. Finally he did. He bumped his head under my chin and started purring. That sealed the deal.
And the lady was wrong, completely. He is the most loving cat. He is constantly trying to sit on our laps and lives for nice touches. He is still a scardy cat and panics when the doorbell rings and hides when we have company over but when it’s just us, he is happy.
He has gotten along with our other cat, Monk, right from the start. She is a bit bossy and domineering but he doesn’t mind. They play and sometimes even snuggle together and only fight when Monk is “not in the mood” for his antics.
He used to be scared of the kids and would run and hide until they napped but now he’s even getting used to them. If they’re quite and sitting still, he will crawl up next to them and squeeze some nice touches out of them too.
He’s not the “best” cat. He poops on the floor when he’s scared and his furriness leaves a Frank trail everywhere. And he’s never been the brightest cat but I’ve never known a cat that is more loving. I can’t imagine living the past 8 without him or what his life would have been without us.

Have you ever adopted or considered adopting a pet? Of all the pets in American homes, only 29% were adopted from a shelter or rescue. Each year approximately 3-4 million pets are adopted, but 2.7 million still lose their lives each year for lack of a home.
Seventeen million people will acquire a pet within the next year. The Shelter Pet Project, a collaborative effort between The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie’s Fund® and the Ad Council, hopes to encourage these prospective pet owners to adopt shelter and rescue pets.
Here is just one of those shelter pets:
