Tablet Time

stylus crayonWhen we started homeschooling in the fall, we decided to buy the girls their own tablet for completing research projects and once in a while playing math games, practicing handwriting or reading.

SONY DSCI still really limit screen time which causes a lot of drama when the girls think they should sneak into their room to play games or even worse when I catch them on YouTube watching videos of all sorts of crazy stuff.

I’ll admit we probably don’t utilize the tablet as much as we could for educational purposes but one thing the girls really do enjoy doing that I’m okay with is handwriting practice.  We have a few different handwriting apps across our different family tablets, each of which present different perks and downfalls.  But the one thing that has made a huge difference in Sugarplum’s handwriting is being able to use an age appropriate stylus rather than her finger or hard to manage small stylus.

For Christmas, Honeybun got a Digital Crayon Stylus and it is pretty awesome.  It’s the same size as a chubby crayon which is great for little hands that are still working on the strength and control to hold skinny pens and pencils and it’s short so they can’t choke up too far on it (a BIG problem for Sugarplum who likes to hold her pencil in the middle rather than towards the tip).

The stylus has a soft end which sometimes causes the tablets to misread where you’re trying to write, sometimes missing the beginning part of your stroke and it isn’t as responsive to quick taps so I’ve found it requires a little bit more pressure and deliberate strokes than a finger.  But it doesn’t seem to be a problem for the girls since they naturally use more pressure when writing.

Overall, I think the Digital Crayon Stylus is a great tool for little hands when using technology.
