Oh how I missed Dublin! The city which we called home for 2 1/2 years quickly re-wrapped me in its splendor. After nearly three years gone, it oddly felt like we’d never left.
My body picked up as if we’d only been away for holiday. My feet knew which way to go. My voice knew which words to use. My heart felt at home.
There is so much I miss about the city that always felt like home and will always hold a piece of my soul.
I miss the ease of getting around.
It’s a very pedestrian city where you don’t feel out of place walking and the city is designed for feet, not cars (quite the opposite of where we are now). I miss being able to hop on a train or a bus and get where I need to go. I miss strapping the kids into the buggy and not having to unbuckle and rebuckle no matter how many places we go.
I miss the kindness of people.
Everyone holding doors for one another. Smiling as you pass on the street. Making polite conversation everywhere. Saying excuse me, no worries, a cheerful welcome and sincere good-bye. Delighting in the kids and engaging them rather than sneering at their existence.
I miss being part of a global community.
While I fit in just fine with the locals, I love the diversity of people all around. Different nationalities, ethnicities, backgrounds, experiences, people.
I miss feeling safe.
I spent three days wandering around the city with my three young children by myself. And not just in the suburbs, the main part of the city centre yet I never felt unsafe. Sure I’m careful with my handbag (which I never used while living there, just kept everything in my pockets) and keep and eye on my kiddos but truthfully, I feel safer walking around Dublin than I do driving in Miami.
I miss the friendships and community.
I still have more good friends in Dublin than anywhere else in the world. The expat community is large but tight and there is always someone willing to help. There is no “me,” only a feeling of “we are all in this together!”
I miss the hustle and bustle.
There is always something to do in Dublin. Whether a special event is on or you just explore all the great parks, museums, shops, cafes and more the city has to offer, there is always something close by, day or night. And no reason to ever be bored.
