The holiday wish list or letter to Santa is a pretty solid Christmas tradition but I’ve never had my kids make one. In fact, I don’t even ask them what they want for Christmas, and here’s why:
I don’t want them to be disappointed
Chances are if they did give me a wish list, I wouldn’t get everything on it. We try really hard to keep gift giving small, especially since we have so many wonderful other family members that are very giving during the holidays and the gift piles get really tall, really quickly! So I know if I was given a wish list, something would surely be left off and what if I pick the wrong item to skip? Christmas could easily take a turn for the worse.
I live to save money
I try to buy everything on clearance or on sale and with coupons. I can get my kids a lot more for a lot less when my options are wide open to what deals I stumble upon rather than being locked into a wish list then having to work really hard to find a good deal on the things they want.
I don’t do crowds
I’m not about to run out on Black Friday just to get a deal on the things my kids have to have. I’d rather sip my coffee and head out mid-morning when all the crazies have gone home to collapse. Did we miss a few deals? Yes, we did. But my sanity stayed in check and my kids are going to get awesome gifts anyways.
I like surprises
My kids have no expectations of what they’re getting for Christmas which means every gift will be a surprise. I have things for them they’ve probably never ever thought of and I always hope that means smiles all day long!
I already know what they want
I’ve spent the past year walking through stores while my kids point out all the things they want or wish they had. I remember these things, I don’t need a written wish list.
