We’ve been using the Sequential Spelling system since we started homeschooling two years ago and while I love the program, my girls still aren’t big fans of spelling. With our new homeschool plan for this year, I’ve made a lot of changes that I hope will make overall life less stressful and this includes trying to make spelling less boring through fun spelling activities.
We’re still doing our regular spelling Monday through Thursday but Friday is our fun day so I created a selection of more fun spelling activities for the girls to choose from on Friday. Throughout the week I keep track of which words they struggle the most with and they then use those words to complete a fun spelling activity.
The fun spelling activities include the traditional things like rainbow writing, putting in ABC or ZYX order and using them in a story but also more exciting ones like “cheer it out!” and making a choo-choo list. I printed each option out on bright-colored cardstock and I have them randomly choose three of the fun spelling activities then select their favorite to do.
It’s a great way to keep them interested in spelling while reinforcing the words they need to review with less complaining. I’d even say they’re excited about the fun spelling activities and much more eager to do their work than usual because most of the fun spelling activities allow the kids to be creative and some are active which helps kids learn while moving around and out of their desks.
