What We’re Reading Now: April 2018

Books and reading have become a big part of our family routine over the past few years. My girls have an insatiable desire to read all the things and even my boys who aren’t yet reading on their own love looking through books of all kids. And we all enjoy sharing read alouds and listening to audio books in the car (two of the ways we integrate good literature into our daily lives).

So I thought it would be fun to start a series outlining what we’re all enjoying reading each month.

Honeybun (9) and Sugarplum (7):

(AL) Goddess Girls series by (AL) Joan Holub and (AL) Suzanne Williams

My mommy got the girls this set for Easter (which we celebrated before the big move) and the girls haven’t been able to put the books down since! Honeybun became interested in the Greek Gods after reading the (AL) Percy Jackson Series and was even Artemis (the Greek Goddess of hunting and protector of the girl child) for Halloween.

The (AL) Goddess Girls books each feature one goddess as a tween girl and highlights each goddess’ strengths and unique abilities and covers topics that modern girls can relate to.

Doodle (4):

(AL) The Adventures of Tintin by (AL) Herge

The classic mid-20th century comic classic, The Adeventures of Tintin, which features a young reporter and his faithful canine assistant, is now available in multi-book volumes. And while Doodle is not yet reading, the comic book style is perfect for him to flip through and develop his own stories and plot lines. He loves that there are policemen and I often hear him giggling as he looks over the illustrations.

Pipsqueak (2):

(AL) Mini Wheels: Mini Fire Engine by (AL) Peter Lipman

This little gem is a double hit with Pipsqueak who has become an avid lover of books because it is both a sturdy board book and a pushable fire truck with working wheels. The book features simple, rhyming text, with a dog and duck fire brigade.

Family Read Aloud:

(AL) Yours Truly by (AL) Heather Vogel Frederick

The second in the “Pumpkin Falls Mystery” series, Yours Truly follows the adventures of a young girl and her group of friends as they solve small town and family mysteries. We listened to (AL) Absolutely Truly, the first book in the series, as an audio book before left Florida and thought the second book would be perfect for our next family read aloud. The main character moves to a new town in the first book and is still settling into her new life in the sequel which makes the series perfect for our current life situation as we all adjust to life in a completely new place.

Audio Book:

(AL) The Sea of Trolls by (AL) Nancy Farmer

This book was Honeybun’s selection from our Audible subscription (AL: Try Audible and Get Two Free Audiobooks). And while I’ll admit I wasn’t too sure I’d be into it when she first selected it, I have to say now that I’m hooked maybe even more than the girls are! We listened to it during some of the long stretches of our drive from Florida to New Jersey and we were all engrossed in the story of Jack Crookleg and his spoiled little sister, Lucy, who believes she’s a lost princess. The story, which takes place in the year 793, especially piqued my interest with the mention of many characters from the Vikings TV series (which is free to watch on Amazon Prime, AL: Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial).

Pin it!What we're reading now, April 2018. Favorite books for the whole family including read alouds and audio books.
