I’m all about getting my kids to read. But more important to me than how much they read, is that they love reading and they gain something from what they read.
That’s why instead of focusing on how many books, pages or minutes my kids read each day/week/month, I instead encourage them to read high-quality books and lots of different kinds of books.
Pin it for later!
The options for reading are endless these days and all it takes is a little creative searching to find different types of books that still fall within a child’s specific interests and sometimes, breaking a child out of their comfort zone helps open up their minds to new ideas and interests.
And because the goal is to read different types of books, you don’t need to worry so much about the book they choose being “grade appropriate,” instead allow your child to pick books of all different levels from pictures books to young adult novels and let them get lost in a new world.
My Summer Reading Challenge is designed not only to get kids to read different types of books but also to reflect on what they’re writing and offers four different levels of journaling pages. The Summer Reading Challenge Journal also includes two different covers, one for summer and one for using throughout the year.
