Boston, Massachusetts

Our most recent visit to hubby’s family in Massachusetts in addition to being our longest since having children, was probably our most eventful as well. We spent the beautiful summer days doing various activities and exploring all there is to do in the area.

And for the first time, we ventured in to Boston with the kids. We had stayed overnight in the city once before on a journey home to Dublin from visit to Florida. That trip we visited the Boston Children’s museum in the morning before heading to the airport for our overnight flight (we got stuck when our original Florida to Boston flight got cancelled and the Dublin flight on the day we were rebooked for booked up). The museum is awesome! We spent hours exploring every nook and cranny of the place, doing every activity. Honeybun and Sugarplum (who were 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 years at the time) loved every second of their time there.

This trip we decided to drive into Alewife from hubby’s parent’s house and took the T into the city. It was Doodle’s first train ride and the girls were very excited because they do not remember all our train rides in Dublin and around Europe.

We had pre-purchased Trolley tour tickets at a discount and it included a visit to the Boston Tea Party experience so we headed there first. The girls loved the interactive visit (especially getting to throw the tea into the water) though they weren’t too sure about the videos portions and Doodle was tired and not really that interested (nothing a good boob couldn’t handle, though!)

We then took the trolley to Faneuil Hall where we got some Clam chowder for lunch before jumping on the Freedom Trail.

We wandered past Paul Revere’s house which Honeybun still talks about (a few days prior we had visited the Concord Bridge where the Revolutionary war began and her grandparents had bought her a book about the war which she had been reading nonstop ever since). We also visited the Old North Church where the girls loved exploring the pews and imagining what it was like to be there all those years ago.

We hopped off the Freedom Trail there and hopped back on the trolley to Boston Common where we watched the Swan boats (but didn’t wait in the long line for a ride, much to Honeybun’s dismay) and saw the ducklings before hopping back on the trolley to Fenway.

It was game day and an absolute madhouse! We wandered the team store and got dinner at restaurant just outside the park while hubby contemplating scalping tickets (which I said no-way-Jose to seeing as we still had to get the T out of the city and drive an hour home.

We had missed the last trolley so walked down Newbury Street, stopping in a few stores we don’t have near us and got some cupcakes before making the long walk back through the park to the T station.

It was a long and exhausting day but the girls learned a lot, saw so much and had a lot of fun and we all look forward to our next visit to Boston.
