I’ve become oddly fascinated with all the silly “National” days. Maybe it’s because I like having a reason to celebrate every day, even when I’m having a terrible day. It also provides me with inspiration for blog posts and a lot of times dinner!
Some of the days, though, make me scratch my head and say “why?!?” Days like “National Chicken Lady Day” (tomorrow, if you want to celebrate) or November 12 which is “National Pizza with the Works except Anchovies Day.” It seems every little thing has a day sometime during the year and every day has a reason to celebrate.
And today is no exception, it’s “National Housewife’s Day.” Usually this would be one I’d look at and say “why do moms/wives need another day?” But it caught my attention because ironically, today is also my birthday. Yep, I was born on National Houswife’s Day.
At first I chuckled to myself about it and then got the feeling of “it was meant to be!” I always knew I wanted to be a mommy, from the time I was small (I played with baby dolls way past when most girls outgrow it!) and while I returned back to work when Honeybun was just a few weeks old, when I officially became a stay-at-home-mom just after her 1st birthday, it felt right.
I’ve been home with my kids now for over six years and I can’t imagine a different life right now. I don’t know that I’d thrive as a working mommy but that doesn’t mean being a “housewife” is easy and fun all the time.
I love being home for my kids and having this time with them while they are little. I love helping them learn and watching them grow. I love their snuggles and questions and experiencing new things together.
But being home alone with them all day isn’t all hearts and glitter. It’s hard and isolating. It’s exhausting and never-ending.
I think National Housewife’s Day was created for the same reason as Mother’s Day: to show appreciation for someone doing a thankless job. I don’t get paid or rewarded for all the things I do. In fact, I hardly get any recognition at all, barely a thank you comes my way. But I do it anyways because I enjoy taking care of my family and maybe someday I’ll actually be appreciated for all I do.
And since I don’t see any good things coming my way for this year’s National Housewife’s Day on a Tuesday, just maybe my children will be extra special nice today because it’s my birthday!
More of my posts on being a “Housewife.”
Hi Melissa, I stumbled upon your blog through Flipboard, which linked to one of your articles about flying with kids. Those posts and all your advice is a godsend because my husband and I will be flying with our 2 month old over the Christmas holidays. (We live and work in Shanghai, China and home is San Diego, CA) We’re gearing up for the long flight, so thank you!!!
And HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Lucky you, you have a second reason to celebrate today! ; )
Thank you so much, Rachelle and so glad you found some useful information. Good luck on your upcoming flight and hope you have a wonderful visit in San Diego!
